i want to develop computer language/programming skills?

my friend can type these codes such as run and reprogram and stuff like that into a black box on his pc and change things in the computer. i want to learn how to do this and maybe even more (such as unlocking certain programs at school). any ideas on how and where i could learn these things. i am currently on a mac but i have a pc at home.

p.s. please don’t post answers like “thats illegal and stupid” its not illegal if i don’t use the skills for hacking.

is programming in java important in computer science?

I got an A in the first semester of java, but doing not so well in the 2nd semester of it. How important is it for this major?
